Lauren, who goes by “Lily King” in the pole community, became a student in 2010 and has been teaching since 2012.
How She Got Started:
I was introduced to pole through a bachelorette party for a friend. To be honest, I wasn’t originally excited about going, but once I got there and was able to do a few things no one else in the group could do, I was inspired to see what else I was capable of.
As a pole student, she started taking classes she had just come off being seriously ill, having no strength whatsoever. The supportive group she found in pole kept encouraging her to keep trying, nd didn’t let her fail at anything. In a world where so many people are conditioned to criticize others, this group did nothing but do everything they could to help her succeed. In time, she says, “These people became some of my best friends and we have continued to encourage each other in all facets of our lives, extending the support out from pole to personal struggles and celebrating accomplishments. If it weren’t for pole, I can sincerely say I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
As a pole instructor, Lauren’s approach to instruction is one of discipline and discovery. Any new physical activity takes time, energy, and patience to learn, and being able to discipline oneself to train, be aware, and practice has more long-term benefits beyond accomplishing one individual goal. She says, “In my opinion, as a student gains the discipline and begins to be aware of their body, a discovery happens both internal and external. You try new things, you are more open and less self-conscious, and you find corners of yourself that you weren’t aware existed. This gives a student a whole new joyous experience and new love self. My job is simply to guide the students through the process, giving them the tools to understand and explore.”
IRL (In Real Life):
When she’s not at the studio, you’ll find Lauren balancing the tantalizing (and rare) opportunities to binge on Netflix (with her kitties on the couch) and craft all-the-things at once. She’s a fan of whipping out decorative bookmarks and accessories, and working on massive “not your grandma’s” cross stitch projects that only the universe knows if she’ll ever actually complete. She’s also a glutton for telling dumb jokes (when you come to the studio ask her why the ghost joined AA), reading and watching documentaries, and sitting on the beach when New England weather allows for it.
The Doors are my favorite band. My all-time favorite song by them is “People are Strange” which I believe is also the shortest song they ever wrote. Now you have a fun piece of trivia too.
I began to teach Pole Fitness 4 years ago and since then have been awed at how other women challenge themselves to be better, stronger, different, and more comfortable with themselves.
