2. You have to be skinny / in shape to do it.

Our society today is brainwashed to believe that being “fit” equates to being skinny. Your body shape does not define your strength or athletic ability. There is no such thing as a right or wrong body type when it comes to pole dancing. Strength comes with time and dedication to the practice. Strength however isn’t everything as there is so much more to pole than just being strong, more than just being able to lift your body weight. It’s about creating an experience that allows you to feel confident in yourself, your body, and your soul.

We have people of all different fitness backgrounds. Some are avid fitness fanatics, and some have never placed foot in a gym in their entire life. Some of the best pole dancers in the world didn’t come from a strong fitness background. There are plenty of experienced polers who can barely do a pull- up yet are still fabulous at pole. They all became good at what they are doing through their love and dedication to the discipline. Once you start pole journey, you will quickly be amazed at what your body is actually capable of doing. Let go of imposed restrictions and challenge the seemingly impossible.

3. You need to already have dance/gymnastics experience

Everyone needs to start somewhere. As adults, if we believed we already had to be partly capable of doing something before we started it, we would never start anything! Dance is an activity you can start whether you already have experience or not, and most of the people that take on pole dancing start as older adults. Most of our instructors began with no dance experience or athletic background.

And even with experience, pole dance and fitness is a completely new adventure. We want you to feel comfortable knowing that no matter how much or how little dance experience you have you can absolutely participate, have a great time, and learn a new skill. It’s never too late to begin learning something new!

4. Pole is only for strippers / I have to dance sexy. No and No!

Pole is often labelled as a sexualized art form due to it being synonymous with bars and strip clubs. While pole dancing does have roots there, it has become one of the fastest growing fitness and dance regimens. Simply, pole is a form of DANCE! Whether you enjoy pole for the sexy side and want to explore exotic movement, or just want to have a good time learning a new performance art, there is something for everyone in the pole dance world.

Believing that you already have to be sexy, or that it is the only goal of pole dance, can make starting out a little intimidating, especially if you are selfconscious about your body. And while many eventually find their way to exotic forms of expression and find joy in it, there are so many paths for you to take while learning and exploring your comfort zone. There are no rules to how you choose to express yourself – pole dancing is about personal empowerment, overcoming challenges and discovering your capabilities, while learning more about yourself through movement, expression, and introspection.

At Sky High Studios, we give you the opportunity to try out pole in all its forms. Our level classes teach you the basics and fundamentals in a progressive manner, and our dance classes allow you to explore dance choreography across many genres, flow, movement, individual creativity, as well as the sexy side with heels classes. 5. It's all about getting to do hard tricks

If you have been on Instagram and seen some pole videos, there are some crazy tricks out there! It can make starting pole seem intimidating or convince you that you’ll never be able to do those tricks, so why start? Pole dance has so many facets, and hard tricks is only one of those. It can also be just doing things low on the pole and finding creative combinations and ways to move with expression, gaining strength to just do simple things and make them look pretty, being part of a community that wants to just see you enjoy yourself, or moving in a way that makes you feel sexy and empowered. All of those elements are part of the pole dance and fitness experience. And the best part is that you get to choose the experience you want!

Once you get through the basics, you can choose to keep working up to higher levels, focus on creativity and choreography classes, or work on moving in heels. It’s all up to you. The most important part is that you are willing to give it a try and explore what experience fits you best. It’s our mission to give you those opportunities and support you in finding that which gives you the greatest joy of self.
